BHS Citizens of the Quarter

Congratulations to the BHS Citizens of the Quarter! After reviewing nominations, the student representatives for the Burlington High School VIEW Committee (Valuing and Inspiring Equity in Our World) recently announced Ms. Stephanie Fishel (History Teacher) and Nimisha Thakkar (BHS Class of 2019) as the term two Citizens of the Quarter. The committee defines responsible citizenship as working to uphold core values of democracy by seeking knowledge and understanding, communicating openly and honestly, serving the common good, and engaging in civic action. Both Ms. Fishel and Nimisha Thakkar consistently demonstrate their commitment to these values and to the school’s mission statement through their work at Burlington High School.

Ms. Fishel engages students in meaningful activities that help them explore their place in a global community. Whether organizing and implementing partnerships with UNICEF, traveling abroad with students, or developing inquiry-based assignments around the schoolwide essential questions, Ms. Fishel is dedicated to ensuring that BHS students understand the world they live in as well as how they can best participate in it. Her willingness to share ideas with colleagues, welcome them into her classes, and create a collaborative community is also evidence of her work to ensure that BHS is truly a place that celebrates and encourages lifelong learning.

Nimisha Thakkar has spent her four years at BHS working to value and affirm all members of the community. While she serves as a student leader in a number of different groups across the school, her work with Humans of BHS and the Multicultural Club is what most stood out to the VIEW Committee student representatives. As a leader in these groups, Nimisha has presented to the entire BPS faculty on the impact of culture and religion on a student’s school life, initiated cross-club collaboration in an effort to help students get to know each other better, facilitated a letter-writing event to show support for members of the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburg, and helped revitalize the Humans of BHS website. She consistently strives to ensure that BHS is an inclusive and welcoming place for all.

Thank you to both Ms. Fishel and Nimisha Thakkar for their many contributions to the Burlington community.

Second Quarter Progress Notes

As of December 7, 2018, we are now halfway through the second quarter.  This is a good time to access the Aspen Family Portal to check on your child’s progress, grades and averages.
Additionally, an email will be sent to parents/guardians of students who have an average of less than 70% in one or more of their classes. If you receive this email, you should be aware that your child is in danger of failing one or more classes.  It is important to make arrangements with teachers to discuss the grade and intervention strategies to improve performance.
We hope that you have been utilizing the portal throughout the year but if not, please review the resources below:

Harvey, Presented by BHS Performing Arts

Comedies have long been a favorite of Burlington audiences so it is with great excitement that Burlington High School announces it will present Harvey, the Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy by Mary Chase. Performances will take place on Friday, December 14 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, December 15 at 2:00 pm.

Best known for its 1950s film adaptation starring James Stewart, Harvey is the story of a perfect gentleman, Elwood P. Dowd, and his best friend, Harvey, a six-foot-tall, invisible rabbit. When Elwood begins introducing Harvey around town, his embarrassed sister, Veta Louise, and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, decide to have him committed. However, comic misunderstandings ensue, hilarity abounds and, in the end, acceptance reigns supreme!

Leading the cast as Elwood P. Dowd is David Kolifrath. He is joined by Alison Martin as Myrtle Mae Simmons and Erin Kerr as Veta Louise Simmons. Also appearing are Grace Visco as Miss Johnson, Juliana Grossman as Mrs. Ethel Chauvenet, Emily Campagna as Ruth Kelly RN, Rachad Mesnaoui as Duane Wilson, Nathanial Trofimow as Lyman Sanderson, Luis Villalta as William R Chumley, Caitlin Shea as Betty Chumley, Levi Theirrien as Judge Omar Gaffney and Joshua DeRome Taylor as EJ Lofgren.

Performances of Harvey will take place in the Fogelberg Performing Arts Center, an accessible venue, located on the campus of Burlington High School, 123 Cambridge Street, Burlington MA. Tickets are $10 for students and senior citizens, $15 for adults, and are available at BurlingtonTheatre.com, 781-A-FUN-TIC and at the door.

Student Writers Help Student Writers

Exciting things happening in the BHS English Department as read on the BHS English Department Blog: This year, the English department at BHS is offering a new elective: “Writing Fellows.” The purpose of this course is to train students as peer writing tutors. According to their mission statement, the Writing Fellows aim to “encourage student empowerment through words, and help students discover and expand their enthusiasm for the craft of writing.” As student writers themselves, the Writing Fellows know that writing is not always easy, and they hope that by using a “student-centered and process-oriented approach,” they can help students “develop their voice and skills while making connections among their peers.”

High School students can now book tutoring sessions during their study halls as well as before and after school. The Writing Fellows welcome students with assignments from any subject area as well as at any stage of the writing process— from idea generation to final editing.

Additionally, the Writing Fellows offer a “rent-a-tutor” program in which teachers can book writing tutoring sessions for an entire class. Based on the teacher’s preferences, one or more Writing Fellows can visit a class to assist students with whatever writing-related project or skill they are working on. So far this semester, Writing Fellows have worked with several classes in this capacity, helping students hone skills such as topic-sentence writing, quote integration, outlining, and effective summarizing. Amanda Lee, a high school English teacher who used the “rent-a-tutor” program for one of her ninth-grade English classes, said that at first she “wasn’t sure how [her] students would respond” to the tutors, but noted that her students became “totally engaged” when working with the tutors and became “more invested in their papers as a result of working with them.”

The first generation of Writing Fellows — a team of ten juniors and seniors— have been working this semester not only to develop effective tutoring strategies, but also to design and launch a student-run writing center. The new BHS Student Writing Center is located in the former workroom in the high school’s upper library. On Wednesday, November 28, the Writing Center officially opened and hosted a launch event that included fun writing activities, a tour of the center, and introductions to the tutors.

By empowering student writers and creating a welcoming and collaborative space, the Writing Fellows hope to “help build and strengthen a writing community within Burlington High School.” They are certainly off to a great start.
Please see the Writing Center website for further information and follow them on Twitter for updates. @WritingBhs

Burlington High School Students of the Month

Gati Aher
Gati Aher is a senior at Burlington High School. She has been part of the National Honors Society since sophomore year and has gotten High Honors or Honor Roll every term. To challenge herself, she self-learns an academic subject every April Vacation. So far she has tested out of Honors Chemistry and Honors PreCalculus and has taken the AP Java Exam. She has gotten 5s on all her 6 AP exams so far, and she is taking 4 more APs this year.

Gati has been awarded the M.A.S.S. Certificate of Academic Excellence, the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award, Gold and Silver Medals for the National Latin Exam, and the President’s Volunteer Service Award for volunteering more than 300 hours in the last three years teaching Indian languages at Shishu Bharati. Her love for giving back to the community can also be seen in her role as President of BHS Peer Tutors and main coordinator of Balagokulum, an Indian cultural organization.

Her extracurriculars reflect her passion for STEM: she is part of HelpDesk, BHS’s IT-group, Leader of Math League, President of Programming and Technology Club, and Head of Computer Aided Design for the DevilBotz FRC Robotics Team. She worked every weekday in this past summer: six weeks at a paid computer science internship at Boston University and four weeks as a camp counselor and mentor at Einstein’s Workshop teaching children robotics and 3D-printing. She also mentors an all-girls FLL robotics team on the weekends and has presented at MassCUE and ISTE, technology in education conferences.

She balances her passion for STEM with a focus on the visual and performing arts. This year she took a break from running cross-country so she could spend more time perfecting her 2-hour long classical Indian dance graduation performance. Additionally, she is a Ted Talk Youth speaker, has won her school’s Factatholon and Poetry Out Loud competitions, and plays four instruments including the oboe. Her artwork has been published in the Marble Collection, state art magazine, and has twice been featured on the cover of Collab, the school’s literary and arts magazine. She wants to use art and technology to make the world a better place. Her dream college is MIT.

Neil Pandit

Neil Pandit is a senior at Burlington High School. Over the past four years, he has attained high grades in very rigorous classes, having held a course schedule that includes Honors and AP level classes. He has also received awards, such as the Middlesex League SILS Award and the Harvard Prize Book Award.

Outside of class, Neil is the President of the Rotary Interact Club of BHS. He has improved the financial standing of the club while also increasing its engagement and philanthropic activities within the community. He is the President of the Multicultural Club of BHS. In this position, Neil steers the club in planning for BHS’s annual day of intercultural exchange and celebration of diversity, “Culture Fest.” Also, Neil is the President of the Medical Careers Club, a club which promotes hands-on learning and discussion with healthcare professionals. Neil competes on the Factathalon team “Socratic Serpents” and has won BHS’s Factathalon Quiz Bowl.

His community service involves photographing and maintaining the official Instagram page for Strongwater Farm Therapeutic Equestrian Center and volunteering at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center. Neil is a volunteer photographer for the India Association of Greater Boston; the domestic violence prevention and family support nonprofit, Saheli Boston; and Indian Americans for Burlington of which he is also the Youth Services Liaison.

Neil hopes to pursue a double major in biology and political science. Neil would like to thank the dedicated BHS teachers and staff members who have guided and inspired him at every step in his educational journey.

Also, please mark your calendar for the annual BHS fall play, which will be “ Harvey”,  the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Mary Chase where Elwood P. Dowd is the perfect gentleman, his only flaw being that his best friend is a pooka; a six-foot-tall, invisible rabbit named Harvey. When Elwood begins introducing Harvey around town, his sister, Veta Louise and her daughter Myrtle Mae are embarrassed. They become determined to commit Elwood to a sanitarium. In error, it is Veta who is committed rather than Elwood after she confesses that, on occasion, she has seen the rabbit herself. Eventually, the mistake is realized and a frantic search begins for Elwood and his friend. Elwood eventually agrees to undergo treatment to satisfy his sister, but in the end, Veta realizes that she loves her brother just as he is and accepts Harvey as a member of the household, understanding that she doesn’t want either of them to change.

The performance dates are December 14th at 7:30 p.m. and December 15th at 2:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at http://burlingtontickets.tix.com

BHS Career Day / State STEM Week

Governor Baker and Lieutenant Governor Polito are declaring October 22 - 26, 2018, "STEM Week" in the Commonwealth. The Baker-Polito Administration is focusing on promoting STEM education because studies have shown that over the next 10 years, U.S. industries will need one million more STEM graduates than our nation's education system will generate.

During STEM Week, Burlington High School is hosting a Career Day for students, scheduled for October 25th. This event is part of BHS’s Career Exploration Program, which is designed to help students make informed decisions about their future paths. Through collaboration with community members and organizations, the Career Exploration Program connects students’ current learning with potential occupations, highlighting the skills they need to find success.

Speakers on career day can choose to stay for one session or for both, sessions start at 9:15 A.M and run through 10:45 A.M. We are encouraging parents from all fields to participate. We would also like to expand the number of speakers representing STEM fields and are asking parents to participate as speakers or to recruit colleagues/companies. Our goal is to find 10 companies and 25 STEM speakers.

Whether you choose to participate or make a referral, we appreciate any effort on behalf of our students. Also, for more information on our career exploration efforts at BHS please visit our website and for more information on the Commonwealth's STEM week, visit their website.

Artist Bren Bataclan to Visit Burlington High School

Artist Bren Bataclan will be here at BHS on Wednesday, September 26, 2018, to present to Burlington High School students.
Bren was born in the Philippines and moved to the US with his family in 1981. He was 12 when they arrived to settle in Daly City, a section of San Francisco with a large Filipino population.
Bataclan's artistic goal is to make people smile.  One way he achieves this goal is that he gives some of his paintings away.  His paintings have reached people everywhere from Austria to Uganda, from Aruba to Wales.
What started as a street project 15 years ago has grown into Bren having given away close to 3,000 paintings in 70 countries as he continues to spread his message of kindness.  When he gives away his paintings, there is a note asking people to 'smile at random people more often.
Bren's message fits perfectly into the Burlington High School BSmart Programming message this year of Your Voice, Your Choice, Choose to be Nice.  Bren’s artwork will be on display in the school art gallery, Cambridge Street Gallery.
This program was graciously funded by The Burlington Education Foundation.
You can read more about Bren here:
