BHS Citizens of the Quarter

Congratulations to the BHS Citizens of the Quarter! After reviewing nominations, the student representatives for the Burlington High School VIEW Committee (Valuing and Inspiring Equity in Our World) recently announced Ms. Stephanie Fishel (History Teacher) and Nimisha Thakkar (BHS Class of 2019) as the term two Citizens of the Quarter. The committee defines responsible citizenship as working to uphold core values of democracy by seeking knowledge and understanding, communicating openly and honestly, serving the common good, and engaging in civic action. Both Ms. Fishel and Nimisha Thakkar consistently demonstrate their commitment to these values and to the school’s mission statement through their work at Burlington High School.

Ms. Fishel engages students in meaningful activities that help them explore their place in a global community. Whether organizing and implementing partnerships with UNICEF, traveling abroad with students, or developing inquiry-based assignments around the schoolwide essential questions, Ms. Fishel is dedicated to ensuring that BHS students understand the world they live in as well as how they can best participate in it. Her willingness to share ideas with colleagues, welcome them into her classes, and create a collaborative community is also evidence of her work to ensure that BHS is truly a place that celebrates and encourages lifelong learning.

Nimisha Thakkar has spent her four years at BHS working to value and affirm all members of the community. While she serves as a student leader in a number of different groups across the school, her work with Humans of BHS and the Multicultural Club is what most stood out to the VIEW Committee student representatives. As a leader in these groups, Nimisha has presented to the entire BPS faculty on the impact of culture and religion on a student’s school life, initiated cross-club collaboration in an effort to help students get to know each other better, facilitated a letter-writing event to show support for members of the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburg, and helped revitalize the Humans of BHS website. She consistently strives to ensure that BHS is an inclusive and welcoming place for all.

Thank you to both Ms. Fishel and Nimisha Thakkar for their many contributions to the Burlington community.
