This past weekend, twenty-two students from Burlington High School competed at MA DECA's State competition. Students in DECA select the categories and area of interest they wish to compete in and then are put through a series of tests to determine the overall winners who will represent MA DECA at the International DECA competition in Orlando this April.
Students at Burlington either worked as a team of 2 or individually to take a written business knowledge test, and then are given a role play scenario and have 10 minutes for individuals or 30 minutes for teams in which they have to develop a solution to the business problem before presenting their ideas to a judge. They complete 2 role plays at competition.
The Team of BHS Seniors Dan Pais and Dillon Owens overall performance on the three challenges earned them a 2nd in the state for the highest combined score in the Travel and Tourism Team Decision Making Event. They also were awarded medals for achieving 2nd place in both role plays.
Individual competitor, BHS Junior Timmy Sullivan, earned 4th place in the state in Apparel and Accessories Marketing Series. He also received a 2nd place medal for one of his Role Plays.
Pais, Owens, and Sullivan will be attending DECA's International Competition in Orlando this April which is attended by over 15,000 students from all over the US and various countries.
Additional students who attend also received medals and recognition:
- Junior, Mikey Pasciuto, Top 10 Award, Hotel and Lodging Series
- Seniors Mira Mehdi and Oliva Varghese, Top 10 Award Marketing Communications Team Decision Making and 3rd place Medal for their Written Test
- Seniors Nikhil Thakker and Michaela Meneghini, 1st place medal for their Written Test
All students who participated in the Team and Individual events were recognized for achieving National Competency on their test and role plays; this is an outstanding accomplishment to have the entire delegation achieve the high scores needed to obtain the certificate of recognition. Congratulations to all the students who represented BHS so well at the DECA State conference and good luck to Dan Pais, Dillon Owens and Timmy Sullivan who will try to win again at the International Competition this April.
