Burlington High School Preschool Program

Accolades for Burlington High School preschool program from the Burlington Union

"Burlington resident Sarah Lewis wrote in to commend high school educator Sheila Kennedy and her high school student helpers.  Kennedy teaches child development courses at the high school as part of the family and consumer science curriculum. The courses involve the study of theory as well as the opportunity for students to work hands-on in the child development preschool, which is where Lewis’s son attended preschool this year.  Lewis said, “I am the mother of a soon-to-be kindergarten student. My son was fortunate enough to attend a preschool at Burlington High School (BHS). My son is a shy only child and with the help of some AWESOME high school students he learned how to come out of his shell and be excited for kindergarten. One student in particular made a real impact on my son: a BHS senior named Willie Harris. He helped my son get over his shyness and taught my son to love school and to be excited to start his formal education.”  After the semester ended, Willie wrote a note to the Lewis family and enclosed this photo for their young son, that at the bottom reads, “I wish you the best of luck. Your Friend always, Willie.”  Lewis remarked, “I don't know that this will ever become news, but to me, as the parent of a young boy just starting out, it was truly touching to see that in this world of horrific events and daily terror, that there are boys and girls, some just about to start their adult lives (like Willie) who are on the right track and who are truly good people. I feel that Sheila Kennedy has done an amazing job and has given these high school students a great opportunity to grow and learn by helping future generations.”
