Winter Sports / March Update

What an exciting week for BHS Athletics filled with intense games and historic accomplishments!  The girls hockey team played in, and won their first ever tournament game but lost to Gardner in the final shot in a shootout.  Congratulations to them on a great season.

Finishing off a great season, the boys basketball team lost in a buzzer beater against Brighton Tuesday night.  Coach Coppola and the girls basketball team qualified for the tournament for the first time in ten years, earning a home playoff game victory over Lynn Classical.  Up next is undefeated and defending State Champs Reading on Sunday at 2:00 at Reading High.  Finally, the boys hockey team starts their playoff run this Sunday against Woburn at the Chelmsford Forum at 4:30.

In other sporting news from the winter season, boys track repeated as Middlesex League Champions and had several individuals stand out in events at the state level.  Congratulations to Coach Carr and the track athletes on a tremendous feat.  Also, boys gymnastics finished third at states.  Congratulations to all our teams and athletes this winter season and good luck in all  upcoming games.  Complete playoff schedules are on the MIAA web site.

Kudos to John Middleton and Matt Lovell for a great performance last Thursday night at the Ides of March Concert.  Once again, our students (and staff) proved why we truly are one of the most talented group of performers around.  It was really fun to watch!

March is a long month.  I would like to highlight a few important events:

Always a highlight - the BHS Music Department presents "Hairspray" this year.  The show runs March 15, 16, 22, 23, & 24.  You can get more information on the show and tickets here.  Also, stay tuned for more information about an optional preview during period 6 on March 13.

BHS is hosting a blood drive next Tuesday, 3/5.  There is still space for teachers and students to sign up.  Our goal for the drive is 80 donors.  As of this morning we are closing in on 60.  Thank you to Matt Jackling, Amy Doughty, and the students from Intro. to Health Occupations for organizing and running this event.

MCAS testing this month is on March 19, 21, & 22.  Like last year we will be following a delayed opening for all students.  A revised schedule will be coming out in the next week or so.

Burlington High's annual Spring Open House/Art Show is on March 21 from 6:30-8:30.  Please mark your calendar so you can touch base with teachers and see our talented artists on display.

National Foreign Language week is March 4-8.  The FL Department and clubs have planned various school-wide activities throughout the week.  You can read more on the Department Blog.
