BHS to Participate in World Book Night

From the BHS English Dept. Blog:

BHS has been selected to be a distributor of books for World Book Night – a program that started last year in the UK and moved this year to the States, where, on one day, people will give away over one million books for free.

Details on the program are located at www.us.worldbooknight.org

We will be distributing copies of the book:

The Brief, Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz

This Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel follows Oscar de Leon, a Dominican being raised in New York City, as he struggles to find a place where he belongs. The narrator, speaking a sort of streetwise Spanglish, chronicles the failures of de Leon, an overweight teen obsessed with fantasy fiction and intellectual pursuits, which are at odds with his hyper-masculine cultural expectation. Below, Junot Diaz reads an excerpt from the novel.

As this novel deals with mature themes, it will only be made available to upperclassmen. Stay tuned for more updates on how this book will be distributed.
