Giampapa Is A State Champ!

via Twitter

Sophomore Steven Giampapa captured the Division 2 State Wrestling Championship at 113 pounds with 1-0 win over Alex Cordenca of Woburn last night at Reading High.  Steven finished the weekend at 4-0 becoming the 6th BHS wrestler to win a State Championship as a sophomore.

Our other finalist, junior Luke Nigro, was involved in two of the most exciting matches of the weekend as he topped Jared O'Brien of Woburn 7-6 in the semifinals. Luke found himself down 4-0 in the 3rd period against O'Brien but an escape and 3 takedowns, the last coming with one second left, gave Luke a 7-6 victory.

In the finals Luke, fell to Jason Ricketts of North Andover 6-4 in close match. Despite the disappointment of the loss, Luke made us all proud as he helped an injured Ricketts to his corner immediately after the match ended.

"It was a great tournament for Burlington Wrestling," noted BHS coach Paul Shvartsman. "These two wrestlers fought through a very difficult and frustrating dual meet season to keep their focus and excel at the end of the year tournaments."
