Reported by Dr. Peter Nassiff, Chess Team Coach
On Wednesday afternoon the Burlington High School Chess Team traveled to Lowell High School for our first match of the year. Lowell is considered one of Burlington’s chief rivals for the state chess title. The match started out poorly as our number one board, Kartike Mathur, lost to his rival, but number two board, Will Sim, and number five board, Mike Warino, beat their opponents. Playing boards 6 and 7 respectively, Dora Kadish and Prateek Rana lost.
The climax of the match occurred on board three where Saqib Hashim won a long seesaw battle that lasted almost 2 hours that clinched a thrilling 23-22 win for Burlington. The high school team meets every Tuesday after school in the lower library and our next match is this coming Wednesday here against another top contender, Malden Catholic.
