YouTube Video of the Week - (Week of October 18th) - Joel Burns Tells Gay Teens It Gets Better

It seems that there are so many great videos that I come across each week, I have decided to post a video of the week each week so that I can share some of these with our school community. You can also check out all my favorite videos on my YouTube Channel.

My video this week comes from Fort Worth, Texas where Councilman Joel Burns delivered a message  that has been viewed close to 2 million times in the last week.  Councilman Burns reviewed some of the heartbreaking stories of harassment, bullying, and gay-bashing that have resulted in the deaths of a number of young men in recent weeks.  As we celebrate Ally Week, I think it is imperative that we have open discussion of tolerance more than just a few times a year. We need schools that embrace the wonderful diversity in students every week.

  1. I'm so glad those problems don't exist in this extreme at Burlington High School. However there is work to be done and possibly hidden bullying. The mentors had a session on bullying and by-standing today with the freshmen... but I think the teachers need the session. I have never seen a teacher at BHS confront bullying nearly as head on as the students have. Maybe the fact that the teachers are so great is why the students are so head-on, but I think the teachers should be more direct in combatting bullying. If they could recognize it better, maybe they could attack it better.

  2. This video is a pretty sad and dissapointing video. I find it extremely wrong for someone to bully and make fun of some one so much to the point where the victim thinks the only way to make it stop is suicide. I think that the new laws in alot of states about bullying is a good idea because sooner or later people will realize that its not worth spending 5 years in jail, and having to pay thousands of dollars in fines, just to pick fun at someone.

  3. These incidents are terrible. I am also relived that situations of this drastic extent do not happen at burlington High. Bullying is a problem at our school but not to the extent that some kids are going to commit suicide. I think a main reason as to why our school does not have an issue with the bullying of Gay teens is because our school has a group called SPECTRUM that works with students to form our school own gay straight alliance. hopefully with this group Students at our school will never have to see these terrible and drastic measures taken.

  4. This is a really depressing video but it is 100% truthful. This subject it absolutely is something that needs to be recognized and solved. Our school is very good with tolerance and we hope it stays that way. I also think that the new bullying laws are a great idea because this is a serious issue.

  5. This video told the sad truth about kids killing themselves due to bullies. In order for bullying to stop, I think people need to be should be more accepting because everyone is different in unique ways. It is clear that we have to solve the bullying problem to stop people from committing suicide. I am very thankful that the bullying problem at my school is not bad.

  6. I think that the amount of suicides lately due to bullying are terrible. I think that parents, teachers, and other children need to realize that bullying is much more serious than people realize and these suicides of the gay teens are proof of that. I think that people need to be more open minded about others being different in order for bullying to stop.

  7. These kids are wrong with what they are doing they feel like they have the right to pick on the gays. What is most wrong is that the teachers and the others that were involved with the problem. Even after the parents were getting involved the teachers still did not do any thing to help the problem they just let it happen. Their was another story that i heard that some kid was humiliated in his school the kid could not take it any more one day he got up for school, got dressed took a belt an tied it around his neck and hung himself from the shelf in his closet. The next day in school all the kids were wearing noose around their necks all day the teachers didn't even say anything. Is this what it takes for teachers to get the picture that the students actually needs some help. It shouldn't even have to come down to this they should already have a handle on the situation. To all the kids out their getting picked on just ignore the person who is picking on you and when you get home don't be afraid to tell your parents the situation. If they love you they will understand. If it keeps happening just don't let it get to you because all the bully wants is to get a rise out of you and when the bully gets that then he/ she has won. So don't show anything that they can feed off. They will eventually move on to another person. So just try and hang on if you can.

  8. Thank God that these problems do not exists at Burlington High School, but bullying is still a problem at our school, but is usually resolved very easily. People now a days have stopped, and decreased bullying because Massachusetts has established a new law that you can serve up to five years in prison for bullying, and get fined thousands of dollars.

  9. I'm very happy that we don't have these problems at Burlington High School. Just like every other school there are bullies and they are delt with very seriously in the school district. If you do bully you could face up to 5 years in federal prison. The video has the truth of what goes on in other schools and its really sad of what happens.

  10. Joel Burns has amazing courage to come out in public for the first time in the way he did. He revealed it in a desperate time to save lives and that alone is an outstanding circumstance. I hope anyone else who have faced thoughts of suicide, whether they are harassed for being gay or not, see this video because it is powerful to hear the story of a successful person who have faced these same problems.

  11. This video is sad but it is the truth. It is hard to hear that students have been killing themselves because they are being bullied. They think the bullying will stop by them hanging themselves or shooting themselves. There is bullying at Burlington High School, but it isn't horrible where kids are killing themselves. I am glad that the bullying isn't that bad here.

  12. This video is very sad. Bullying needs to be stopped. No kid should go to school everyday and be bullied and harasses by other students. It must have been so hard for the students to wake up and go to school everyday. No one should feel the need to kill themselves by being bullied.

  13. This video was very sad but true. Most suicides are by kids getting bullied by others. I feel like the media doesn't shed much light on this fact. Its so unfair that these kids had to resort to killing themselves because they were made fun of for how they acted. No one should ever have to be bullied and this video made me more aware how just a simple comment can really affect someone else.

  14. Watching this video is extremely sad. However, it is so powerful. It is inspiring to watch such a strong person who pushed through hard times and today tell about it to help others. Thankfully, Bullying about gays in this school has never escalated that far, but that is not to say we should not do things about it. Even if we do not experience it daily in this school, others do, and spreading awareness and support is very immportant for any issue.

  15. This video is a very serious issue in teens these days. Bulling is becoming more and more common and is a very serious issue. Many people are bullied everyday and it needs to stop. If people are harassing someone to the point that they kill them selfs its clearly not ok and it needs to stop
