30-Hour Famine Raises $4,000

Guest Blog Post by Brinda Patel-

The 30 Hour Famine is an international movement that helps raise awareness for world hunger and various crises happening around the world. The crisis we focused on is earthquake relief in Haiti. There are many thousands of people suffering from the earthquake that occurred on January 12th in Haiti. In an attempt to raise money for the people who have been affected the Model UN and Amnesty International clubs again organized the 30 Hour Famine. We raised almost $4,000, which has been donated to World Vision. This organization is working to help meet immediate needs and promote lasting changes that will strengthen communities and move families toward self-reliance.

On March 4-5, students from Burlington High School fasted for 30 hours in order to raise money for the thousands of people who have been affected in Haiti. The students were only allowed to drink fluids. This taught students about the daily circumstances for many people around the world. The fast started at 8:30 AM on Thursday, March 4th and continued until 2:30 pm on Friday, March 5th. We broke the fast together in the BHS cafeteria. In addition to students getting donations from their friends and family, we set up outside of the cafeteria during both first and second lunch to ask for donations of $1. The outpouring from the students and faculty was impressive. Mrs. Gould and Mr. Whitten, sponsors of Model UN and Amnesty International clubs say that a record number of students participated this year.
