Reason #1,002 Why I Love BHS

I received an invitation to a performance in the BHS band room at the end of the day. Every so often Mr. Lovell, our BHS Band Director, will hold a little private recital in the band room where members of the BHS band and chorus get to show off their talents to their classmates.

I have added in two clips from yesterday. The top clip is two of our students who walked in and performed a little ditty that they made up as they went along. Quite appropriately, they called it "Wing It." I couldn't help feeling a little jealous that these two sophomores could walk in unrehearsed and do an exponentially better job than I could do with weeks of preparation.

In addition, I couldn't help thinking that this is exactly the type of authentic experience that schools need to provide more of for students. Creativity, high levels of critical thinking, and student choice were all prevalent.

The clip below is two more BHS students performing Ingrid Michaelson's "Die Alone." I was impressed! If this were American Idol, I would have to say they would be heading to Hollywood!

Thanks Mr. Lovell and all of the BHS Band and Chorus members for the invite! What a great way to end the week!

  1. This is exactly the type of creativity and expression that standardized tests never capture. Congratulations to you and BHS for celebrating these talents.

  2. Wish I could have been there for this recital! I'm sure everyone who performed sounded great!
