I Am Not "The School" - Please Don't Blame Everyone For My Decisions

I appreciate all of the feedback that I receive on the BHS Principal's Blog. In fact, I wish we had a lot more of it since one of my main goals in blogging is to create a forum for conversation about what happens here at Burlington High. Comments allow us to reflect on how we go about our business and consider changes to our practice. As you may have noticed change comes slowly in public education.

In any event, I would like to respond to a comment made regarding
my post from last weekend's raising of the Championship Banner at the BHS Boys Hockey game. The comment stated - "It's sad to see the favoritism this school shows towards certain athletic teams."

Because I want to be very clear about my response to this comment I put it in the title of the post - "I am not the school." While this blog is intended to relay the news and events from here at BHS, I am the sole decision-maker on what gets posted. Therefore, please do not hold anyone else here at BHS responsible for anything that you disagree with or any errors of omission on my part. While I feel fortunate to be the Principal of a school with so many great things happening, I am sure that things are sometimes overlooked. In fact, I would love an e-mail to larkin@burlington.mec.edu to make me aware of any oversights.

My second comment is in regards to the posting of athletic news. I have intentionally gotten away from posting athletic news this year due to the fact that it is so difficult to do justice to all of the hard-working BHS athletes involved in the numerous interscholastic activities that we offer.
However, I felt that the hockey team's banner-raising was significant due to the fact that it involved one of the biggest sports stories in our school's history as well as a widely-publicized local news story last spring. Did you know that the BHS blog had 10,000 hits last March as people logged on to catch updates on our team's exciting journey to the Boston Garden? Then again it could have been due to my tremendously engaging blog posts. (Hey, I can dream).

This aside, we are in the process of trying to get the Athletic Department Blog off the ground. Unfortunately, things have been moving more slowly than I would like. Thanks to the coaches and/or team managers that have found the time to send material in for the Athletic Blog. I welcome your ideas, photos, video clips, for this new blog so that any perceived favoritism can be quickly dismissed.

Finally, I appreciate "everyone" who takes the time to read the BHS blog. While we will definitely disagree on some issues I think it is crucial that we have a forum to voice our thoughts constructively and respectfully.

Stay tuned for more of "my thoughts" in 2010! I hope they will be accompanied by a lot more of your thoughts in the comment section.

  1. Please don't stop posting about exciting events, even if they garner less than positive comments at times. It's a truism that if your blog starts to get popular or a following, not everyone is going to agree with what you post. At least they are reading it! Do keep on posting.
