BHS Poet Laureate David Murray and Mr. Lally

Junior David Murray was selected as the winner of the 3rd annual Poetry Out Loud competition today at BHS before a packed crowd of students and parents in the BHS Auditorium. Murray's recitation of "Madmen" by Billy Collins and "Sonnet CXVI" by William Shakespeare. David will now move on to the Poetry Out Loud State Competition at Framingham High School next month.

Deep jyoti Deb was the runner-up with his recitations of "A Psalm of Life" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and "Playing Dead" by Andrew Hudgins. Our other phenomenal finalists were Eric Leva, Abigail Sherburne, Barbara Wye, Jenna Burke, Jessica Villalta, and Maham Nadeem.

It should be noted that Burlington High School is the only school in the state of Massachusetts in which every student in the school participates in Poetry Out Loud. This level of participation is made possible by the dedication and hard work of the members of our English Department.

Our finalists were all recognized on stage at the conclusion of the program.

Our judges had their work cut out for them.

We were fortunate to have the following individuals dedicate their time to judge the finals:

Dr. Conti - Our Superintendent of Schools

Donna Glick - the Director of Education from the Huntington Theatre

Carla Panciera - A published poet and author who is also a former BHS English Teacher

Sarah Sawyer - Director of the Writing Center and English teacher at the Williston North Hampton School

Susan Kelly DiSanto - Our BHS Librarian
